Molynes snap five-match winless run
Molynes United’s Head Coach Alex Thomas credited the work done throughout the transfer window for their success against Waterhouse Football Club as they snapped a five-match winless run with a 2-1 result to kick-start the second round of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
A 27th-minute penalty conversion by Jermy Nelson and Jason Wright’s 71st-minute strike handed Molynes United the much-needed win at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Sunday. The victory took them up to 15 points and provisionally into 11th position.
Shaqueil Bradford (42nd) got the goal for Waterhouse, who had their three-match unbeaten run ended. They slipped to eighth position on 18 points.
For Thomas, this performance could represent the start of what is to come from Molynes, who are intent on making a deep run into this season.
“It’s three valuable points, we needed this one to start the second round on a positive note. We lost our first game to Waterhouse but we analysed our problems and studied them and today we got home, so well done to team Molynes,” Thomas said during a post-game interview.
“We got some players from the transfer window and we also got back some senior players that were absent from the first game, so we are going to push the team as far as possible,” he added.
Waterhouse Head Coach Marcel Gayle believes they were undone by faulty shooting and good glove work from their opponents’ goalkeeper Harrison.
“I thought we played well, we pressed them high and we created a lot of opportunities. It’s just unfortunate that we couldn’t cap it off. But kudos to Molynes, they played well, and I thought the goalkeeper was fantastic for them and deserved the man of the game,” Gayle said.
After Jermy Nelson converted from the spot, Molynes continued to press the ascendancy and almost doubled the lead in the 33rd when Nicholas Nelson picked out Shanardo Gordon in a decent build-up, but the substitute fired his effort into the side netting.
Waterhouse continued to absorb consistent pressure and toiled to put together a decent attacking spell until the 42nd when Andre Fletcher orchestrated a tidy build-up that opened the door for Bradford to fire home from close range.
With a new sense of purpose, the Drewsland-based team briefly camped out in the Molynes quarter and should have gone ahead; however, Andre Fletcher’s close-range effort was blocked by the outstretched right leg of custodian Peter Harrison.
And the lanky goalkeeper was again called upon to use every inch of his frame, diving full stretch to his left to parry Kenroy Howell’s stinging left-footed drive from deep inside the 18-yard box to ensure the score remained unchanged at the break.
Waterhouse picked up where they left off on the resumption as they again went close 11 minutes in, when Fletcher’s weighted free kick fell kindly for Bradford, whose well-struck right-footer was again blocked by Harrison.
But it was Molynes who found the go-ahead goal against the run of play when Wright got on the end of a telling pass from Shamario Dennis and finished with aplomb, leaving Kemar Foster in goal for Waterhouse with no chance.
