Austin aiming high for Glengoffe
Alexia Austin of Glengoffe High School put in a notable performance in winning the Class I girls’ 100m sprint hurdles in 14.07 seconds (+0.7m/s), not far outside her lifetime best of 13.98s at the Queen’s/Grace Jackson Invitational Meet at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Kadina Deeble of The Queen’s School in 14.45s and Seanna-Gaye Leslie of St Jago in 14.89 were second and third, respectively.

Though getting close to her best time ever, Austin said that there are areas of her race that she needs to work on as the season progresses.
“It’s alright, but it could have been better,” she said after the race. “I need to work on my trail leg and my start,” she continued.

Austin was a finalist in the event at the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships last year, finishing fifth in her specialist event, but she has her eyes set on a better placing this year.
“I’m feeling pretty good. By God’s grace I will make it into the top three,” she said.

She is the defending champion for 100m hurdles at the Eastern Championships which will be held next month, and she aims to defend her crown.
“I’m feel great, and I am hoping to do well again at Eastern Champs,” Austin noted.
It was a hard day at work for the Glengoffe standout as she returned later in the day to compete in the 200 in which she placed seventh overall with a time of 25.79s.
