Cavalier aim to end Portmore’s unbeaten run
FORMER champions Cavalier FC will try to bring the unbeaten run of Portmore United to an end when both teams clash in the feature match of the Jamaica Premier League at Stadium East.
Match time is 3:00 pm.
There will be three other games today at 3:00 pm as Molynes United take on Harbour View; Chapelton FC play Humble Lions; and Faulkland FC tackle Montego Bay United.
In the lone game at 5:30 pm, Dunbeholden battle Arnett Gardens in the second match at the Stadium East field.
On Monday there will be a double-header at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex as leaders Mt Pleasant Academy will play Vere United at 5:00 pm before Waterhouse FC tackle Tivoli Gardens at 7:30 pm.
With Mt Pleasant losing their unbeaten run last week, Portmore United remained the only unbeaten team in the 14-team league.
Against that background, Cavalier Head Coach Rudolph Speid is aware of the task on hand but still he relishes the prospects.
“We will be playing against Portmore United, the only unbeaten team left in the competition, and they have really done well. We have done well ourselves so it’s going to be an interesting clash between two top six teams,” Speid told the Jamaica Observer.
Cavalier are sitting second in the league with 19 points courtesy of six wins, one draw and two defeats to be just one point behind leader Mt Pleasant on 20 points.
Portmore United, on the other hand, are down in fifth spot with 15 points with three wins and six draws from their nine games.
Head Coach Phillip Williams, like his counterpart Speid, is expecting a most difficult game.
“[It’s] going to be a tough game for us coming up against one of the in form teams in the league. With that said, we are no pushover and once we execute on the day [it] will be difficult to play against [us] and stand a very good chance of walking away with all three points,” Williams pointed out.
The league’s top marksman Collin Anderson, with eight goals, will again lead the charge for Cavalier along with Dwayne “Busy” Campbell (five goals), Ronaldo Webster, Orlando Russell and Christopher Ainsworth. Portmore United will be depending on Tevin Scott, Javick McFarlane, Rushane Thompson and Emelio Rousseau in their victory push.
Meanwhile, third-placed Arnett Gardens (17 points) should be too strong for a Dunbeholden team sitting in eighth spot on 12 points. Arnett have won their last two games and are on a roll.
Champions Harbour View are struggling, having not won in their last four games. They sit in the fourth spot on 15 points and will be hoping to reignite their season with a win against Molynes United in 10th on 10 points.
In the Clarendon derby at Effortville Community Centre, sixth-place Humble Lions (14 points) should be too strong for the promoted Chapelton FC down in 11th spot on eight points.
In the St James derby at Wespow Park, sixth-place Montego Bay United (12 points) should be able to secure three points from a Faulkland FC team struggling at the bottom on just two points.
