Latchman, Ramgeet show early season form
CHARLES TOWN, West Virginia, (CMC) — Barbadian Reshawn Latchman and Jamaican Andre Ramgeet both logged wins, as they tasted form in the early stages of the new season at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town.
The 31-year-old Latchman won race one with 2-1 choice Moneyfornothing while Ramgeet, also 31, captured race four with long shot Siente La Brisa on Wednesday.
Already, Latchman has four wins from 20 appearances in the new campaign which got underway January 4, while Ramgeet’s victory was his first in 16 outings. Justin Lewis and Arnaldo Bocachica both have five wins to top the standings.
Latchman opened his account over seven furlongs, when he produced a stalking ride aboard Moneyfornothing to beat the three-year-old maidens by a head.
Favourite Danny Winkster and Wesright duelled through the half-mile run in 48.45 seconds before Latchman brought his chestnut gelding with a late run to get by.
Meanwhile, Ramgeet, the son of legendary Jamaican rider Andrew Ramgeet, paired with 16-1 shot Siente La Brisa to collar the four-year-old and upward fillies and mares in a 4-½ furlong dash.
Crafty Windsor sped to the front early before Ramgeet brought the four-year-old filly with a strong late bid to edge the leaders by a neck.
Latchman finished fourth last season with 89 wins and winnings of US$2.04 million, while Ramgeet managed 36 wins and winnings of US$894 107.
