Granville hope to advance to semis at expense of Heights
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Granville United will hope to improve their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals of the St James Football Association Sandals Resorts International Major League when they take on Heights FC in their rescheduled return-round game at the UDC field today, set to start at 3:00 pm.
The game was originally set for December 29 but was postponed as Granville United refused to play without the presence of uniformed police officers.
Last week the Competitions and Disciplinary Committee of the St James FA ruled that the game should be played today “at the cost of both teams”.
Granville United had won their first-round game 1-0 and are expected to win again today, against Heights FC who are out of contention for a place in the semi-finals and will be simply honouring the fixtures.
A hectic finish to the first round is expected, with four teams (including Granville United) in a close race for the three remaining places after Flanker FC booked their spot last week and are leading the points tables with 23 points — one more than Reggae Youths who have lost their last two games, including against Cambridge FC on Monday, giving up a 1-0 half-time lead and falling 2-1.
Cambridge FC are in third place on 19 points, with Lilliput Rovers and Granville United tied on 16 points.
A win for Granville United today would see them jump to third place on goal difference ahead of Cambridge FC. They will be hoping that Davian Thelwell, Odane Snow, Dane Franklyn and Dennis Ricketts are able to deliver the goals today.
