Roadblock cleared in Portsea, St Elizabeth following protest over cell tower
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – A roadblock in the Portsea community in southeastern St Elizabeth has been cleared following Thursday morning’s demonstration by placard-bearing protestors, wearing what appeared to be hazmat suits, over the erection of a cell tower in the area.
Councillor Layton Smith (Myersville Division, People’s National Party) told OBSERVER ONLINE that the protest could have been avoided if there was better communication between state agencies and residents over the permit for the construction of the cell site.
“The agencies have a fault in it,” Smith said.
OBSERVER ONLINE was told by a resident that Smith and the Member of Parliament for St Elizabeth South Eastern, Frank Witter, responded to the call to meet with residents on Thursday morning following the demonstration.
