Lions on hunt for striker to fix lean offensive output
With his club netting a modest seven goals from eight matches in this season’s Jamaica Premier League (JPL), Humble Lions Head Coach Andrew Price says the Clarendon-based outfit will be aggressively pursuing a striker in this month’s transfer window to bolster his attacking unit.
Humble Lions, who failed to make the play-offs of last season’s competition, are currently sixth in the standings with 14 points, six behind leaders Mount Pleasant Academy.
“I am looking at players and so it is just to be able to negotiate properly and see if we can get the right person with the right ability at the right price,” said Price.
“That is a concern for us because we are just doing enough to win games, but we definitely want to increase our goal scoring proliferation, so we definitely have to work on that,” he said.
However, Humble Lions are one of the two best defensive teams in the league this season, having conceded four goals from eight games. Only Portmore United, who have conceded three goals, have a better defensive record than Humble Lions so far.
Humble Lions missed out on the play-offs of last season’s competition by way of goal difference to eventual champions Harbour View. The ‘Star of the East’ secured the final spot after finishing in sixth place ahead of Humble Lions in the standings.
Price said the club is determined to make the play-offs of this season’s competition and his players are well aware that they have to be consistent in order to achieve the feat.
“I believe that we need to get some consistency in the team and I think [a lack of] that is what is affecting us now. We have been very good defensively because when you look in the league, I think we are probably one of those teams that have conceded the least [number] of goals,” he said.
“We also definitely need to be scoring more goals, so if we do go into the window, which is very challenging with the financial situation out there now, it will be to look at persons upfront,” Price said.
“Our aim is to continue staying in the top six because we want to have a play-off opportunity and that is our focus for the remainder of the year to be constantly in the top six.
“Once you are in the play-offs, you have a chance because Harbour View have proven that last year and they beat us out by one goal to earn that sixth spot and then they went on to win the league title, so once you stay in the top six, then you have an opportunity to win the title,” he added.
