The Best Dressed Chicken giveaway winner
Thursday Food reader, retired telecommunications engineer Lawrence Wong is all smiles with his Christmas hamper courtesy of The Best Dresssed Chicken.
Wong’s response to the question — What is your favourite Christmas food memory — was the first e-mail received.
His response was:
My best Christmas food moment is when my mom would start to prepare for Christmas by preparing the ham with cloves and saltpeter from months before. You start to anticipate. But Christmas Eve she would put everything together so cooking can start early on Christmas Day after we come from church. There was a little of everything. The biggest common fowl that was being fatten up. The side of pork from the butcher, the best tasting egg nog, the curried goat, fresh vegetables, mac and cheese, etc. And the Christmas cake. The children would take turns each year to get the bowl, spoon to lick. Everything was made from scratch. The table spread was mouth-watering.
When time to eat, we would ensure that others in the community got something first, then we go home, all 10 children, my parents and sometimes extended family, sit down to eat and give thanks.
