New challenge
Reggae Boyz midfielder Devon “Speedy” Williams has signed a deal with United Soccer League (USL) Championship outfit Colorado Springs Switchbacks ahead of the 2023 season.
However, the 30-year-old’s deal is pending league and federation approval. Williams, who has 35 caps for the Reggae Boyz since making his debut in 2010, told the Switchbacks USL website www.uslchampionship.com that he is very happy to be part of the organisation and he is looking forward to playing his part to helping the team to achieving its goals in 2023.
“I’m really just looking forward to adding on to the success the team had last season,” said Williams. “It’s evident the Switchbacks are building towards a championship and I’m glad to be a part of it,” he added.
The Switchbacks general manager and Head Coach Brendon Burke said he is delighted that they have signed Williams because he is a very good player.
“He will bring high end quality and leadership to our locker room and the hope is that his experience winning titles at this level and in Concacaf with Jamaica will carry us through the most critical parts of the season.
“Speedy is a player that has won the whole thing three times, he has every tool you would want,” said Burke.
Williams, who is a former St George’s College Manning Cup standout, joins the Switchbacks from Miami FC, where he made 53 appearances for the club across the regular season and play-offs.
He was ranked second on the team this season with 1,619 passes attempted and posted an 88 per cent passing accuracy rate while leading the team with 47 interceptions and winning 21 tackles.Williams has made 198 appearances in the USL Championship’s regular season and play-offs in his career, recording 14 goals and 11 assists.
The steady and reliable player began his career with the New York Red Bulls II in the 2015 season and won the USL Championship the following season as part of a midfield that also included current USA player Tyler Adams. Williams then claimed two more titles in the following two years after moving to Louisville City FC.
