D Angel Foundation treats 500 in hometown for Christmas
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – It’s the eve of Christmas Eve and dancehall artiste D Angel was in a giving mood. The entertainer, born Michelle Downer, was in her hometown of Spanish Town where she handed over some 500 Christmas care packages to the elderly, disabled and less fortunate.
Stuffed in festive red and green shopping bags were well-needed food items including bread, oil, sugar, flour, rice and more. D Angel was a picture of concentration as she ensured every person who turned up walked away with a goodie bag for the Yuletide season.
Admitting that philanthropic initiatives her Spread A Little Love Foundation undertakes consumes a lot of her time and pulls on most of her energy during the season, the entertainer says the love for her fellow Spanish Town people keeps her going.
“I’m feeling so good. When you see the smiles on the elderly faces — Miss Pansy that came today is 91-years-old and she dance fi mi. The blessing weh dem gi yuh when you’re giving back, mi have blessing cyah done right now,” she told OBSERVER ONLINE.
“I was chosen to do this because only God Almighty know how mi do it. The love for Spanish Town and the love for the people especially the elderly who are often time neglected is why I do this.”
“As a girl who grew up in Spanish Town, I know the people who come out, dem just can’t afford it. When yuh hungry a one different supmn, especially at Christmas time. So if I can do this to make somebody can have Christmas dinner this Christmas, a di best thing that for me,” she continued.
Several volunteers who were present at Friday morning’s event at the St Catherine Parish Council, heaped praises on the Stronger singer. Highlighting the hard work D Angel poured into making the giveback a success, they expressed that at least 500 people in Spanish Town will have a merrier Christmas because of her kind ways.
“I feel very proud (of D Angel). This is very good, very inspiring,” said Kelsey Saunders, Miss Distinction College 2022. “I am a humanitarian. I am a nurse so giving and caring is what we do so that’s why I came out to help today.”
“I feel so proud of her for giving back especially to the elderly because maybe they don’t have family members close by for Christmas so this is a very good effort on her part to help them,” said Yolanda Ellis, Miss Distinction College second runner-up.
Alicia Grant, a member of the Spread A Little Love Foundation since the beginning of 2022, said this is her second give-back initiative with D Angel since joining her team and expressed that she’s more than happy to offer up her services to assist the dancehall star.
“I was with her earlier this year when she handed out bun and cheese for Easter and we’re here again just to spread a little love for the Yuletide season. Not everyone is privileged to buy something for themselves so it is a great privilege for me to be here to put smiles on the faces of those who are less fortunate.”
A Christmas give back in Spanish Town has become customary for D Angel who has vowed that as long as she’s able and her fans are willing to donate to her foundation, she will continue to host the seasonal event.
