Six Jamaican Christmas songs to get you in the spirit of the season
We are just five days away from Christmas, and the O-Team is definitely feeling the Christmas spirit. While lavish dinners play a huge part in making the season a memorable one, so too does entertainment.
Whether you’ll be playing from a small Bluetooth speaker or you’ll have an extravagant sound system-like setup on Christmas, the day just wouldn’t be complete without music. Blasting one’s favourite carol on Christmas morning is bound to set the tone for a ‘jolly good time.’
1. Mek the Christmas Catch You In A Good Mood— Joe Gibbs.
Even if you’re not feeling the Christmas spirit, once you listen to this song, your ‘Grinch-like’ behaviour should slowly melt away. This classic is a guaranteed mood lifter and will almost certainly put you in a ‘good mood’. Tun up the speaker and “mek the Christmas ketch you feeling nice!”
2. Santa Clause (Do You Ever Come to the Ghetto?)— Carlene Davis.
While this Christmas favourite is a stark contrast to the Joe Gibbs original, it’s still a must-play during the Yuletide season. The carol sees Davis questioning ‘Santa Claus’ motive, as according to her analysis, Christmas in the ‘ghetto’ usually looks and feels different from Christmas in ‘richer’ neighbourhoods. Expressing the need for ‘Santa’ to also visit inner city communities, Davis advocates for ‘Mr Christmas’ himself to pay a visit to ‘poor, underserved’ communities.
3. Christmas in the Sun— Stage Crew.
This song highlights the very best of Jamaica and showcases just why Christmas in Jamdung is unlike anywhere else in the world. While blizzards keep many in other parts of the world locked indoors for much of the season, ‘down in Jamaica there’s hot, sunny weather…it’s the Christmas season and the fun cyah dun, so have a joyful, irie Christmas in the sun.”
4. Christmas Breeze A Blow— Fab 5.
No Christmas playlist is complete without a Fab 5 original and this song is a season favourite. While Jamaica enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year, the festive season is marked by cooler temperatures thanks to what we’ve dubbed ‘Christmas breeze’. There’s something about the cooler air that makes the season especially inviting.
5. We Wish You A Irie Christmas — Jacob Miller, Ray I
What better way to wish someone a happy Christmas than with some good ole Reggae vibes? A refreshing, island spin on the English classic, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, this song is also another must-play at Christmas time. I mean, what could be better than an “irie Christmas and a dancehall New Year?”
6. Breadfruit Roasting on an open Fire — Yellowman
If you’re a foodie (like we all are at Christmas time) then this song is sure to give you all the feels and leave you longing for Christmas dinner even more. Another reggae spin on a Robert Wells and Mel Tormé classic from 1945, the song proudly showcases the best of Jamaica’s mouth-watering cuisine. We may not have chestnuts to roast on an open fire but we are not to be left out when it comes to Christmas favourites as we have our dearly beloved ‘bresheh (breadfruit). We also have rice and peas, ackee and saltfish, sorrel, yam, banana and so much more. So no chestnuts, no worries because “Jamaica food good fi yuh back.”
