Offset’s Chocolate Dreams
When it comes to birthday celebrations, there’s nothing like a good cake, and no one knows that better than celebrities! Whether they’re throwing a huge shingdig or celebrating privately with family, stars understand the importance of a wow-worthy confection.
That’s why when American rap superstar Cardi B needed a birthday cake fashioned after a pair of her husband Offset’s favourite kicks, for his 31st birthday celebrations in Jamaica, she enlisted Chocolate Dreams CEO Michelle Smith to work her magic. The Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards 2018 Chairman’s Award recipient, who recently returned from Paris, came highly recommended.
Offset’s birthday treat was a vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream filling, infused with Hennessy and frosted in a special cannonball blue. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the Grammy-nominated rapper’s single-tier cake, a perfect colour match to a pair of Air Jordans, featured splashes of gold, and was created in just a few hours.
Smith’s boutique-style bakery was selected along with four other Jamaican chocolate companies by the International Trade Center (ITC) to attend the Salon du Chocolat, a yearly trade fair for the international chocolate industry.
“The ITC is supporting the growth of the cocoa and chocolate industry across the region, South America and some African states,” explained Smith. “The show allowed me to see new trends, meet many international players and visit numerous world chocolate masters’ to see how their businesses work. I also was priveleged to attend the World Chocolate Masters competition to see them live at work building amazing creations and showpieces,” she continued. “The ITC took me on a whirlwind tour of dessert cafés and I appreciated how integral the industry is in building economic wealth in a country. It helped me recognise that we need to do very little to increase our standards and that there is enough for everyone to be creative and appreciated.”
The birthday cake was presented to Offset during a family-filled celebration at Lobster Dave’s Seafood Restaurant in Ocho Rios, where the festive group indulged in the Shenseea Lobster. The popular dish is prepared by stuffing a large lobster shell with sautéed lobster meat, then baking it to perfection.
