I’ve Got Magic dazzles in Ahwhofah Sprint
AS expected, the Philip Feanny-conditioned I’ve Got Magic easily won the $1.14-million Ahwhofah Sprint, the main attraction on the nine-race programme over six furlongs (1,200m) at Caymanas Park yesterday.
I’ve Got Magic, a four-year-old American-bred bay colt who was down two classes for this trophy run, produced a late run in deep stretch to defeat rivals by three and a half lengths in the three-year-old and upward Overnight Allowance contest.
Champion jockey Anthony Thomas held I’ve Got Magic in mid-pack at the off as Last Lick (Chalrick Budhai) dashed into the early lead, holding the front end ahead of Sweet Majesty (Paul Francis), Blue Vinyl (Shane Ellis), and The Good Witch (Shavon Townsend).
Blue Vinyl challenged Last Lick for the lead entering the half-mile (800m) turn before pulling away for the lead and opening up on the field as I’ve Got Magic rounded horses.
Hugging the inside rails and cutting the turn entering the straight, I’ve Got Magic exploded in deep stretch and blew past Blue Vinyl inside the final furlong (200m) to win convincingly in the end. Blue Vinyl held on for second place, with Money Monster (Reyan Lewis) getting up for third place.
After splits of 23.0 x 47.1, the final time for the race was recorded at 1:13.1.
Also on the day, champion trainer Anthony Nunes and jockey Samantha Fletcher won two races each.
Nunes saddled Milos (Shane Ellis) in the $1.01-million Starters’ Trophy and Manaco (Tevin Foster) in the seventh race. Fletcher was successful aboard Action Run in the first race for trainer Leroy Tomlinson and Three Card Guy in the third race for trainer Donovan Plummer.
Action continues on the weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
