I’ve Got Magic all the way in Ahwhofah Sprint feature
Four-year-old American-bred bay colt I’ve Got Magic returns down in class for what is expected to be a one-sided affair in the $1.14-million Ahwhofah Sprint feature race at Caymanas Park today.
Bred by Fast Anna out of the Half Ours mare Lil Miss Richie, I’ve Got Magic tested the deep waters of the Mouttet Mile on December 3, when finishing down the track in 10th place, some seven lengths behind the winner and stablemate Excessive Force.
I’ve Got Magic, however, was prominent throughout the race as he sat just two lengths back in fifth place behind Mahogany, Runaway Algo, and Atomica going into the half-mile (800m) turn before weakening in the straight.
With a more relaxed pace and the opposition more manageable, the Philip Feanny-conditioned I’ve Got Magic should be an easy winner at this Overnight Allowance level over the distance of six furlongs (1,200m).
The last time I’ve Got Magic was at this level was on March 12 this season, and he was an easy 10 ½ lengths winner over Crimson going seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m) in a smooth 1:32.2. Champion jockey Anthony Thomas has been called upon to do riding honours aboard the Lakeland Farms Limited-owned bay colt.
Blue Vinyl, from the stables of Patrick Lynch, is also down in class, having participated in the Jamaica Cup on November 12 and the Mouttet Mile on December 3 at the highest level of competition on the racetrack.
The three-year-old bay colt finished ahead of I’ve Got Magic in the Mouttet Mile after coming home in eighth place by 5½ lengths. Blue Vinyl made up a tremendous amount of ground in the last furlong to get a piece of the pie in the Mouttet Mile, which paid purses for the top 10 runners.
However, with the race going shorter at six furlongs, Blue Vinyl might find it a bit difficult to reel in I’ve Got Magic this time around. If I’ve Got Magic fails to sparkle, then Blue Vinyl could be smiling at the end of this race.
The event is the ninth and final race on the card, with a post time of 4:50 pm. First post is at noon.
Of the remaining 12 horses in the field, maybe the likes of The Good Witch, Artesia, Golden Wattle, Go Deh Girl, Nuclear Noon, and Money Monster could find themselves in the running for the minor share of the race.
Meanwhile, seven juveniles will face the starter in the $1.01-million Starters’ Trophy, a native-bred two-year-old maiden special weight event over four furlongs (800m).
Trainer Anthony Nunes holds the aces for this race with the top three runners in the contest, Savvy Girl (Savoy Stomp–Runallday); City Hawk (Midnight Hawk–Magic City); and Milos (Casual Trick –The Vibes Lady). Both Savvy Girl and City Hawk are first time runners, while Milos has raced once before.
Also on tap is the $790,000 Master Blaster Trophy, a native-bred four-year-old and upward (non-winners of four)/imported four-year-old and upward (non-winners of three) Restricted Allowance III contest over five-furlongs (1,000m) straight.
Press Conference, True Bravado, Magical Mood, Regal and Royal, and Quiet Boss are the leading contenders for the top honours.
