Amateurs get tennis champs underway
Media practitioner Ricardo Chambers was among those who had winning starts as amateur players got the All-Jamaica Tennis Championships going at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Saturday.
Chambers, playing in Class Two on court one, defeated Raj Khanna in straight sets 6/3, 6/3 to signal early intentions as he is also down to compete in the Class One category.
Kyle Millwood and Garth Dayby also started positively in Class Two, getting by Bradley Winter and Rasheed Anderson, respectively. Millwood bettered Winter in straight sets 6/1, 6/0, while Dayby recovered from a 4/6 opening set loss, taking the second and third sets 6/0, 10/5 over Anderson.
Rudi Jackson was also on point in Class Two with a 6/2, 6/1 win over Shadaine Douglas.
In Class Three action, Omar Symister bettered Rennex Callaghan in three sets 5/7, 6/1, 10/6, and Laszlo Bakon also defeated Richard Bailey in a three-set encounter, 4/6, 6/2, 10/6. Another three-set contest saw Bryan Robinson beating Louis Cruickshank 4/6, 6/3, 10/4.
Sean Martin showed good form against Audley Coley in a 6/0, 6/0 straight-set win, so too did Stephen McConnell, who defeated Nikita Arkhangelskiy in straight sets 6/0, 6/0. Jason Anderson bettered Vincent Teran 6/3, 6/2.
Other events to be contested are men’s and women’s open; men’s 45 pro; ladies’ B; adult doubles event; boys’ and girls’ 10, 12, 14, 16; and 18 singles and doubles.
The championship will run through to December 22.
