Qatar World Cup: How much prize money is at stake?
For the FIFA World Cup 2023, there is much more than the coveted trophy on the line for participating teams.
Qatar’s tournament will see one of the biggest prize purses in the competition’s history as FIFA has allocated some US$440 million in prize money. With a record-breaking sum up for grabs, here is how each team in the tournament will fare in terms of cash prizes.
According to sportingnews.com, the 2023 World Cup Champions will receive a record $42 million in prize money, a $4m increase when compared to the 2018 winning purse.
The runner-up team will receive 30 million, while the third and fourth-place teams will walk away with $27 and $25 million respectively.
Simply qualifying for the 2022 World Cup saw each team being paid a $1.5 million participation fee.
Progressing through the knockout stages saw that money being increased even further. Teams knocked out at the group stage walked away with $9 million each while teams eliminated in the round of 16 nabbed a cash prize of $13 million each.
FIFA allows each team to decide what share players receive.
Prior to 2006, World Cup-winning teams never pocketed more than $10m, with 1982 champions Italy walking away with an estimated $2.2m for their efforts according to sportingnews.com.
