Player of the Year Fowler hungry for more
FOLLOWING her recent accomplishment of winning her fifth-straight Player of the Year award in the Australian Suncorp Super Netball League, Jamaica’s Janiele Fowler has put celebrations on hold as she continues to work hard for more success.
Fowler, Jamaica’s ace goal shooter, scored 929 goals for her West Coast Fever team, shooting 97 per cent and making four super shots. She had also pulled down 55 rebounds and scored 1668.5 Nissan points.
Fowler, who had been with Jamaica’s senior Sunshine Girls since 2010, was also named a goal shooter in the Suncorp Super Netball Team of the Year, joined by Fever Captain Courtney Bruce who was named the defensive reserve.
“It’s a very humbling feeling to know that I’ve accomplished this, and it only motivates me to keep going. I am very happy with my performances throughout the season. I mean, scoring 929 goals is a lot of goals and I am grateful for that and for everyone who has been supporting me, however, I’m hoping to continue to break this record,” Fowler told the Jamaica Observer.
Since joining the Australian Suncorp Netball League in 2018 Fowler has netted an impressive 4,370 goals. In addition to this season’s 929 goals, Fowler scored 884 goals in 2018; 709 goals in 2019; 965 goals in 2020; and 883 goals in 2021.
Fowler has been considered not only one of the greatest players to set foot in the competition but also one of the best around the globe.
“Wow, I am honoured to be considered one of the greatest shooters but this also shows that I still have a lot more work to do in order to become the greatest — and that is a legacy I want to leave behind. I know that it will take a lot of hard work and dedication but I am willing to go the extra mile,” Fowler said.
“My mentality towards my personal goals for my career has been the driving force behind my form, along with the hunger and love I have to be out there on the court. Netball is me, and I am netball,” a smiling Fowler said.
Fowler said that being named Player of the Year means a lot, which will boost her confidence level going into England’s series next month.
“Being named Player of the Year means a lot because the amount of talented athletes in the league speaks volumes for what I’ve done,” she said. “I believe this is going to be a good series and will definitely help in our preparation for the World Series,” she added.
Speaking on the selection of players for the series, Fowler said that she is happy with the squad and looking for great things from her teammates.
“I am pleased with the squad because it’s a mixture of youth and experience, and right across the board the talent is vast,” she said.
