JC, KC square off for Champions Cup
One of the biggest high schools rivalries in the country will be re-enacted when Jamaica College (JC) and Kingston College (KC) clash in a what should be be a mouthwatering showdown in the final of the ISSA/WATA Champions Cup knockout competition at the National Stadium starting at 5:00 pm.
JC, who last won the title in 2014, will be hunting their second trophy this season, having won the Manning Cup title against the St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) last Saturday at Sabina Park.
The Davion Ferguson-coached JC secured their spot in the final with an exciting 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over STATHS, this after both teams played out a 1-1 draw at full time. On the other hand, KC booked their place in the final with an exciting 4-2 win over Clarendon College.
Ferguson said he is expecting a tough encounter from their opponents, but he is confident that his team will come out victorious.
“It is a final and we have played to reach in this situation, so we are excited because it is an opportunity to win another trophy to add to the Manning crown that we would have won a week ago,” said Ferguson.
“This is a trophy that we want to win and so we are taking it very seriously on Saturday.
“However, they are a very good team because I know the coach very well and we have had our battles in the past and I have a lot of respect for them and what they are doing,” he added.
Ferguson says his team will be focused on offensive to try and snatch the trophy.
“The focus is definitely on our team and what we can do right in terms of being offensively disciplined and see how many goals we can score and prevent them from scoring against us,” he noted.
JC will be led by national senior player Tarick Ximmes, along with Kevaughn Wilson, Jhavier Lynch and Maquan Aldridge.
Meanwhile, KC Coach Raymond Watson said while JC are the favourites to win today’s game, he is confident that his team will give a good account of themselves.
“These are two quality teams with a lot of good players, but of course Jamaica College are definitely the favourites with the high calibre of the players that they have in their line-up,” said Watson.
“Kingston College coming here being the underdogs, it is not a lot of time that we are playing a game that we are the underdogs but we are looking forward to a very exciting game. We will be trying to create an upset here because coming here we have nothing to lose. I think we have outdone ourselves by being here and so we are looking forward to the upset,” he added.
KC will look to Dujuan ”Whisper” Richards, who netted all four goals against Clarendon College in their semi-finals contest.
