Dorman hopes for Walker Cup success to impact change in violence-plagued Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli Gardens High School (TGHS) remained in the hunt for an ISSA schoolboy football title when they turned back the challenge of St George’s College (STGC) 1-0 in the semi-final of the Walker Cup at the Stadium East Field on Tuesday.
The win came courtesy of a 26th-minute strike from Dwayne Johnson which has left the 2005 champions hoping to end the drought in the final on Friday at Sabina Park.
Meanwhile Johnson’s teammate, Jaheim Dorman, who was named man-of-the-match, was delighted that his mother was able to see him deliver a superb performance for the team.
“My mother came to watch, and I received the man-of-the-match, so I feel proud. I feel good in myself,” he said.
Dorman said he was feeling great to help get his team into the final after all these years.
“It’s a great feeling and we enjoyed it, we enjoyed the game. It’s been so long since Tivoli has come this far and to do this, I enjoyed it and I feel nice and feel great in myself.”
Dorman believes that victory in the final can have a great and positive impact in the community in which he resides.
“I feel it would change things, all the violence and those things, I feel things would change,” he said.
The midfielder noted that his team had met their main objective on Tuesday and will now turn their attention to the final challenge of the season.
“We came here for one thing and it’s to win, to get the job done and go home and prepare for the final.”
They will face another inner-city school in Haile Selassie in the final and with one of his best friends playing on that team, Dorman is anticipating a fierce battle.
“It will be a great match. They have a good team. They can play and we will be seeing them in the final.
“We see fight and we see war. We have to go out there and fight, nothing comes easy, so we have to go out there and do it.”
The Walker Cup final between Tivoli Gardens and Haile Selassie will be played at Sabina Park on Friday starting at 3:30 pm.
