Calabar crowned 3 on 3 basketball champions
ROSE HALL, St James — Calabar High were crowned champions of the first high school 3 on 3 basketball competition that was organised as part of the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic Men’s NCAA tournament that was staged at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St James, last weekend.
Calabar High beat Herbert Morrison Technical 13-11 in overtime after the teams had tied at 11-11 following regulation time.
Excelsior High were third place in the competition that saw 10 teams taking part.
Calabar High’s Mark McGowan was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was also the leading scorer.
Herbert Morrison started well in the finals and led late but a turnover late in regulation time, when they were leading, proved costly.
The Montego Bay school led 4-0 and 6-4 before Calabar High tied up the game at 7-7 and then took the lead, ahead at 9-8.
Herbert Morrison rallied to tie up the game at 9-9 with just under 90 seconds to go when Hubert Rodney scored a two-point basket to give them a buffer with time running out.
A turnover, however, allowed Calabar High back into the game and they scored the next four points in the match, tying up the scores then amassing the only points in extra time.
