Succulent Gardening Part 2
Know before you grow — gardening tips for care and growing of succulents:
Overview
Succulents and succulent plants are thickened, fleshy, and engorged leaves (meaning, they are able to retain water in dry conditions and arid climates). There are over 10,000 different types of succulents from the various species mentioned above. Many are continually being crossbred by nurseries worldwide.
Container and potting medium
• The best containers for succulents are terracotta, clay and ceramic with drainage holes as they allow maximum aeration, breathability and assist in getting rid of excess water.
• The size of the pot must be in proportion to the size of the plant. Rule of thumb, pot – 10% wider than plant. Example: A 2″ succulent — a 2.5″ to 4″ pot; 4″ succulent — 4″ to 6″ pot.
• Traditional plastic pots are not breathable and not recommended if you get a lot of rain in your area. However, if used, soil must be extremely porous (purchase cactus potting mix or add sand or pebbles).
Care and growing
• Water every other week during non-rainy months; for inside — water when soil is totally dry (use the finger test).
• Like any other plant, when succulents become root-bound (too many roots) it retards growth, so please repot.
• Repot succulents at least every two years.
• Fertilise once per month.
I hope you’ve been inspired to plant a succulent and watch it grow!
