LMU beat Georgetown as Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic tips off
ROSE HALL, St James — Loyola Marymount University (LMU) beat Georgetown University 84-66 overcoming a 10-point deficit at half-time in the first repeat meeting of two teams in the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic which got underway on Friday at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St James.
Loyola Marymount Lions, who play in the Western Coast Conference, trailed by 10 points, 32-42, at half-time but roared back in the second half with an avalanche of three-point baskets.
LMU, who won their first meeting at the Jamaica Classic 65-52, in 2018, ran their season record to three wins and two losses as Georgetown slipped to 2-2.
Meanwhile, Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina beat the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 81-65 in the opening game, while Wake Forest Demon Deacons beat LaSalle University 75-63 in the other game.
In the fourth game of the day, Utah Valley State played Morgan State.
It was a forgettable second half for the Georgetown Hoyas, coached by Jamaican-born former NBA superstar Patrick Ewing as they were outscored 52-24 under a barrage of three-point baskets.
Four LMU players scored in double-digits, led by Keli Leaupepe with 15 points and nine rebounds, making three of four three-pointers in the second half.
Justin Ahrens scored 12 points, making four of seven three-point attempts while Rick Issanza and Cam Shelton both scored 10 points each.
Brandon Murray scored a game-high 19 points to lead Georgetown, Jay Heath scored 15 points, Qudus Wahab scored 12 and Primo Spears scored 10 points.
Georgetown University was a basketball powerhouse in the 1980s and 1990s, but suffered through a 6-25 record last year, a year after winning the Big East Conference title and playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015.
The Big East win saw Ewing becoming the first person to win the title as both a player and a coach.
LMU chipped away at the lead in the second half, cutting it to two points, 44-46, and with 13 minutes 56 seconds to go, tied the scores at 46-46 with 13 minutes 36 seconds to go, then took the lead for good on a three-pointer from Ahrens before easing away to a solid victory.
Wake Forest won their fourth-straight game of the NCAA Men’s College basketball season with their win led by Tyree Appleby’s 23 points from 10 baskets, including two three pointers to lead the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team as they ran away from the “Explorers” in the second half after leading by just two points 35-33 at half time.
Damari Montsanto came off the bench to score 14 points for Wake Forest, Zach Keller scored 11 points while Andrew Carr also got 10.
LaSalle snapped a two-game winning run in their loss and were led by 23 points from Josh Nickleberry who made six of his 13 three-point attempts.
Queens University easily handled Wisconsin-Green Bay 81-65 as they won their third game of the season against one loss while the losers were going down in their fourth-straight game of the season.
Led by 23 points from guard Kenny Dye, 15 from Kalib Matthews off the bench and 14 from AJ McKee, Queens rallied from a point down at the half-time break to outscore Green Bay by 17 points 47-30 in the second half and cruise to the win.
Cade Mayer was the only Green Bay player in double-digits with 10 points while four others had eight points.
