Champs Clarendon College cool hot Mona
Defending champions Clarendon College produced an excellent all-round performance to book their place in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Wata Champions Cup after outclassing Mona 3-1 at Sabina Park on Saturday.
Marques Reid (18th minute), Kristoff Graham (31st), and Kshaine Gordon in the 63rd were the goalscorers for the Lenworth “Teacher” Hyde-coached Clarendon College.
Denzil McKenzie scored the lone goal for Mona in the 56th minute.
Hyde says he was very pleased with his team’s performance.
“I think we played well because we dominated the game, and so I am happy that we are now in the semi-finals,” he said.
Mona Coach Craig Bulter said his team played well despite the defeat.
“I think that we came out battling at first because we were pressing and we were winning the ball, but by the 18th minute there was a mistake by our goalkeeper and a goal scored on him,” said Bulter.
Meanwhile, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) Coach Phillip Williams heaped praise on Shaekone Satchwell after the midfielder braved an illness to lead his team to a 1-0 win over Manchester High in their at St Elizabeth Technical in Santa Cruz.
Satchwell, who left the field no less than three times, particularly in the first half, was observed throwing up at least once. However, he battled the “bad feeling” and later found the all-important goal in the 49th minute in a lukewarm contest where chances were at a premium.
Meanwhile, Jamaica College were 4-0 up against Mannings High in the feature contest at press time.
While it was not their most fluent performance, Williams welcomed the fact that his team remains in contention for another title ahead of their Manning Cup semi-final against Kingston College on Tuesday.
“It was a decent game, not the most exciting, where chances are concerned, but Shakeone Satchwell is our X factor and he continues to deliver for us,” Williams told the Jamaica Observer.
Much was expected of this rematch of their 2018 first-round meeting in which STATHS prevailed 4-2 in extra time, but the fairly decent crowd that turned out was left disappointed.
Having signalled their intentions in a goalless first half, which they dominated to some extent, STATHS inevitably broke the deadlock four minutes into the resumption when Satchwell converted a delightful free kick from just about 25 yards out.
Though they continued to marshal proceedings, STATHS had very little to show for it as their next best chances fell in the 74th when Andre Salmon had two bites at the cherry, the first going high, while the second, which came in quick succession, was kept out by Shamar Commock in goal for Manchester.
Manchester, for their part, showed some fight in the middle of the park but were never allowed any real look-ins in the attacking third.
In fact, their best chance came in the latter stages when Yarek Carnegie opened up space for a left-footed drive which went straight at custodian Jaheem Williams in time added.
