HEART-WARMING
OVER 50 young women from the Homestead Place of Safety in Stony Hill St Andrew for girls were feted with Christmas gifts from double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson-Herah and Reggae Boyz winger Leon Bailey, through their telecommunication partners Flow, during a treat on the grounds of the facility onFriday.
As part of the activities the young ladies competed in a shuttle relay, a penalty shoot-out competition, as well as a dancing contest between the respective teams of Thompson-Herah and Bailey, who are both global ambassadors for Flow.
Thompson-Herah said she was very happy to be part of the day’s activities because enjoys giving back to the less fortunate.
“I am always excited to give back because giving back is one of the biggest things for me whenever it comes to Christmas,” shared Thompson-Herah.
“This is a girls’ home and most of the children are in a situation where they may not be able to go and visit their families and friends for the Christmas and so, see myself and Leon Bailey here. I know that it warms their hearts,” she said.
“I think that these girls will talk about this for the rest of their lives and the rest of the year and so I was very excited to be a part of this event,” Thompson-Herah added.
Bailey, who plies his trade in England for English Premier League outfit Aston Villa, said he was pleased to share in the activities with the young ladies.
“For me, I love giving back as well and so it is an amazing day to be here and be able to encourage them and have fun with them,” said Bailey.
“I came from the ground up and I can understand some of the struggles that some of them might have faced, and so I am just happy that I am able to work together with Flow to give back and to show my support to these young ladies,” he expressed.
Latoy Lawrence, senior marketing manager of Flow, said her company is committed to giving back to the less fortunate, especially during the Christmas season.
“We are extremely happy just to be a part of the girls and just to give back, and at this time of the year we want to bring the vibes and bring good energy to those that are less fortunate,” said Lawrence.
“Last year we were at Windsor Lodge in Mandeville and this year we are in the cool hills of Stony Hill. There were approximately 50 girls and they were super excited, especially because we did it in partnership with our world ambassadors Elaine Thompson-Herah and Leon Bailey, and at the end of the day each girl left with a gift.
“They also received tablets and some of the things that they asked for, especially because our objectives are to really try and bridge the digital divide,” she added.
Lawrence noted that she was very happy to have both Thompson-Herah and Bailey as part of the day’s event because they are two of the country’s top sporting stars who are role models to many young people, including the Stony Hill girls.
“As a woman I see such hope, and it is was really good to have Elaine Thompson-Herah here because they can look at her, they can look at me, and they can look at the other females around them and be encouraged and to know that this is just the start and so just keep going and you can achieve anything that you want,” Lawrence opined.
