Help coming for Lionel Town – Mayor
CLARENDON, Jamaica – Residents of Lionel Town in Clarendon said they were grateful for the meeting with the Mayor of May Pen, Councillor Winston Maragh, who visited the community to speak with them on Monday.
The residents have been complaining about the road conditions in the community and are seeking assistance from the authorities.
Maragh told the gathering that he understood their concerns and sympathised with them. He said the community was one of several in Clarendon earmarked for rehabilitation in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic threw a dent in those plans.
He said, earlier this year, the council had completed the tendering process, identified a contractor and sent an estimate to a parliamentary contract committee.
The mayor said by the time it got to the committee, it noticed that the prices and other costs had gone up significantly, so it recommended that the matter be retendered.
“So we are now waiting on the (National) Housing Trust to tell us when to advertise,” Councillor Maragh told the residents.
He said that in the interim the council would get a grader, allow the water to run off the bad roads and then fill the holes with stones. He said the grader should be taken to the community by Wednesday.
He said from his understanding, some residents have made makeshift bridges in the community, and these have blocked off the drains, causing water to settle on the roadways. He asked whoever made the bridges to remove them.
The residents thanked the mayor for his time but noted they were very frustrated, but awaited the improvements.
