‘Music gonna teach dem one lesson’, Bob Marley sang many years ago. Organisers of Fun In The Son lived up to that premise on October 15 with their community outreach event at Pembroke Hall High School in Kingston.

Chief organiser Tommy Cowan told the Jamaica Observer that gospel artistes, including Carlene Davis, American preacher/singer Donnie McClurkin, Kevin Downswell, Nadine Blair, Goddy Goddy, Rhoda Isabella, Sounds of Perpetual Praise and Pembroke Hall High School Band, helped ensure all goals were met.

“We have inspired the community leaders, the schools, the church, the police, and they will fuel purpose and a sense of destiny among this generation of youths to realise the potential that is in all of them,” he said.

This edition of the popular event was meant, in part, to bring stability to the crime-ridden St Andrew South Police Division where Pembroke Hall is located.

Residents, members of the church and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) attended the day-long show. Many from the community participated in health, wellness and sports missions, as well as activities conducted by Jamaica Child Evangelism.

Cowan disclosed that a number of youth from Pembroke Hall expressed interest in joining the JCF which staged a recruitment drive.

He credits the presence of Downswell and McClurkin for a strong turnout.

“Music is the attraction, the bait. The truth is God created each person with a wealth of potential and if we seek God you will discover your purpose,” he said. “Fun In The Son transcends music. It helps people to discover themselves through the music – the love, the care and the Word.”
