William Knibb, Cornwall clash in dacosta Cup
WESTERN contenders Cornwall College and William Knibb Memorial are to meet at Drax Hall in a round-of-16 Group 2 clash on Tuesday that could help to determine qualifiers for the quarter-finals of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association daCosta Cup football competition.
Start time is 3:00 pm.
Both teams won their first games on Saturday and another victory today would put the winners in the driver’s seat for a spot in the next round.
Four games are scheduled for Tuesday, weather permitting: Dinthill Technical will seek to rebound from their first loss of the season when they face Paul Bogle High at York Oval in another Group 2 game.
All four Group 1 teams are on one point after both games were drawn on Saturday. On Tuesday, Manchester High and Christiana High are scheduled to meet at the former school’s base in Mandeville, while champions Garvey Maceo High and Central High are to clash at Foga Road.

Every game at this stage is crucial as teams seek to stay in contention for the more prestigious daCosta Cup and the all-Island knockout competition. Those teams which finish outside of the top two in their groups will be left to vie for the Ben Francis KO instead.
The match at Drax Hall will attract the most attention, with the teams coming off close wins.
William Knibb Memorial won the most recent game between the two, a 4-3 result in a Zone A game in last season’s truncated competition. Williams Knibb went on to win the zone that year.
The Dewight Jeremiah-coached team has gone an impressive 11 games this season without conceding a goal but they have scored only two goals in their last three games after scoring an eye-watering 49 in their previous eight games. As many as 37 of those goals came in four games against two opponents — 20 against Herbert Morrison Technical and 17 against Muschett High.
Both their goals since the end of the first round have been scored by Mark Lewis, who has netted 16 times this season.
The 12-time former champions Cornwall College have lived a charmed life, twice dodging the bullet to stay in the competition before pulling off Saturday’s stunning win against Dinthill at Drax Hall.
The 16-year-old Braxton Richards has been the talisman for the Cornwall College team, scoring twice against Vere Technical in their second-round return game to overturn their loss in the first leg. He got the equaliser against Dinthill Technical in their come-from-behind win on Saturday.
Garvey Maceo High are unbeaten in the daCosta Cup since last season, drawing only twice in 23 games this season, and they will no doubt be gunning to get back to winning ways when they face Central High.
The champions have scored 44 goals this season — 29 in the first round and 15 in both second-round games against deCarteret College — but on Tuesday they face a tough Central High team that eliminated Irwin High and held Manchester High to a draw last weekend.
