Duckie says Montego Bay ‘got it right’ against Waterhouse
TUCKER, St James — Montego Bay United’s Coach Donovan Duckie said his team got their tactics and strategies correct in their narrow 1-0 win over Waterhouse FC in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) match at WesPow Park on Sunday.
Leonardo Fogarthy’s first-half goal was the difference during a match in which both teams created good scoring chances but failed to make use of them.
In the first match of the double-header at the venue, Dunbeholden FC beat Faulkland FC 2-0 to hand the promoted team back-to-back losses. Stephen Barnett, in the eighth minute, and Shakeem Powell, in the fifth minute of time added in the second half, were the scorers.
After coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Portmore United at Drax Hall last week, Montego Bay United earned their first win of the season, beating a Waterhouse FC team that was coming off a win over Molynes United.
“It was a good fight. Tactically, I thought we got it right,” Duckie told the Jamaica Observer.
“It was important for us to be strategically correct today, we played disciplined and we had to defend stoutly as we know the characteristics of this Waterhouse team. Against Portmore United we played an open game but today we had to adjust,” he said.
Marcel Gayle, the Waterhouse coach, watched as his team spurned chances late in the game.
“Kudos to Montego Bay, they finished their chances and unfortunately we did not take ours. But it was a much-improved performance from last week. We are on the road and there will be hiccups and we will take heart from this performance and come again,” Gayle said.
Minutes after missing two opportunities to put the home team ahead, Fogarthy atoned after a brilliant solo effort from Johann Weatherly with a low shot into the lower left corner of the Waterhouse goal.
Weatherly, who earned a starting role after coming off the bench against Portmore United, switched from the left to the right wing and after a mazy run through the Waterhouse defence, his low shot was blocked by goalkeeper Kemar Foster. But the rebound only got as far as Fogarthy who was just inside the 18 yards box to strike cleanly past the custodian.
Weatherly got the chance to add his name to the score sheet in the 90th minute after he was picked out by Allan Ottey with a well-weighted pass just inside the Waterhouse six-yard box but Foster blocked the shot at point-blank range.
Waterhouse FC should have snatched a point deep into added time but Zain Hylton, who had replaced Duvaughn Dunkley in the 76th minute, saw his lofted shot come back off the top right-hand corner of the Montego Bay goal frame.
