Reggae Boyz Bailey, Reid guide EPL teams to victory
LONDON, United Kingdom (CMC) — Reggae Boyz Leon Bailey and Bobby Reid both scored as their English Premier League clubs surged to victory on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Bailey, who was in scintillating form, scored after just two minutes as Aston Villa made the ideal start since the sacking of Manager Steven Gerrard as they hammered Brentford 4-0 at a buoyant Villa Park to record only their third win of the season.
It was only Bailey’s third goal for Villa since he joined them from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
The 29-year-old Reid, meanwhile, netted his third of the campaign as Fulham hit back to win 3-2 at faltering Leeds United.
Ex-Liverpool Captain Gerrard was fired on Thursday following a heavy defeat at Fulham, with first team Coach Aaron Danks taking charge of Sunday’s game.
And Danks enjoyed an incredible debut in the dugout as Villa, who had been struggling to score goals under Gerrard, raced into a 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes.
Bailey started the ball rolling when he swept in from 12 yards from Douglas Luiz’s pass following a corner. Danny Ings made it 2-0 five minutes later when he stabbed in from Bailey’s cross before the striker got his second on 14 minutes, converting a penalty after Tyrone Mings had been fouled. Ex-Brentford striker Ollie Watkins added a fourth on 59 minutes following a Bailey cross.
Brentford are still without an away win this season and striker Ivan Toney — a one-time Reggae Boyz target recently called up by the England camp — insisted similar performances will be unacceptable.
“Shambles, to be honest. Shambles,” he said.
“We were like a bunch of kids out there. I don’t mind losing games, but not like that. Embarrassing performance from the boys.”
The win moved Villa up to 14th in the table, three points above the bottom three. Brentford, meanwhile, are 10th on 14 points.
Seventh-place Fulham went into the break at 1-1 at Elland Road, but defender Reid put the visitors ahead on 74 minutes when he steered home a header before Willian added a third to ensure that not even Crysencio Summerville’s late goal could alter the result.
The win gave a confident Fulham side a second-successive win following Thursday’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa, and left Leeds in the bottom three.
