EPL: Chelsea, Manchester United lock horns
With the excitement of El Clasico (Real Madrid vs Barcelona) and the humdinger between Liverpool and Manchester City behind us, fans will be hoping that they will witness the same trend this weekend when Juventus hosts Empoli in Serie A, plus Chelsea and Manchester United lock horns in the English Premier League.
Event # 1 – ITA, Juventus vs Empoli – 9:15 am
Juventus will be aiming to build on a hard-fought 1-0 win over Torino in the Turin derby when they welcome Empoli to the Allianz Arena today, Friday, October 21. Having been beaten 0-2 by AC Milan in the league and further embarrassed 0-2 by Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in the UEFA Champions League, Juventus rebounded by scraping past Torino at the weekend. Having had a woeful start to the new campaign, Juventus find themselves in mid-table and surely this must be the weekend that the ‘Old Lady,’ finally manage to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season if they intend to move up the table.
Empoli, on the other hand, will be hoping to continue a satisfactory season so far that has seen them remain in mid-table, without even putting together a decent run of results. Indeed, Empoli have only managed one win all season but have frustrated teams with draws. With that said, Empoli are just two places behind Juventus in the table as they are currently 10th following their 1-0 win over Monza at the weekend.
KEY STATS
Juventus – have alternated a draw and a win in their last eight Serie A home matches; they won 3-0 v Bologna in their last encounter — they last won consecutive home league games in March (v Spezia and Salernitana).
Empoli – have avoided defeat in four of their five Serie A away games this season (W1 D3). In their history in the competition, only in 2006/07 under Luigi Cagni had they managed to go unbeaten in their first six away games in a single season.
Both sides – Juventus are unbeaten in 17 of their last 18 Serie A meetings against Empoli (W15 D2), scoring 39 goals (2.2 per game) and keeping a clean sheet 11 times in the process.
The betting tip. Juventus win.
Event # 2 EPL – Chelsea vs Manchester United – 11:30 am
Two Premier League giants will go head-to-head tomorrow, Saturday, October 22, as Chelsea welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge aiming to continue their recent good run of form. Chelsea have looked increasingly good since the arrival of new coach Graham Potter, moving into the top four and looking really good in Europe too. The Blues, Chelsea, will enter this match following their impressive 2-0 away win at Aston Villa last weekend, a result which took them to fourth in the table. In Europe, Chelsea have also been particularly good as they currently lead their group having secured two wins, one draw, and one loss so far.
Manchester United, on the other hand, have begun to show clear improvement in their play and results in recent times. United are currently fifth in the standing with 16 points and many fans are of the view that the glory days might be returning to Old Trafford. With the arrival of coach Erik ten Hag, the team appears to have a new lease on life and have been playing some attractive football in recent times. A top-four finish is looking more likely for Man United and an away win for them over Chelsea at the weekend would be a huge step towards making that desire a reality.
KEY STATS
Chelsea – are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions and have a winning streak of four matches in the Premier League, plus they haven’t lost in any of their last 10 home matches.
Man United – have scored at least one goal in five consecutive matches and they haven’t lost in their last four games.
Both sides – the last 36 meetings with Chelsea playing at home against Man United have seen Chelsea winning 14 times, with 13 draws while Manchester United have won 9 times. The goal difference is 48-39 in favour of Chelsea. Last season’s matches: 1-1 (Chelsea at home) and 1-1 (Manchester United at home).
The betting tip. Draw.
