Warmington likens Hylton to Riverton City dump, calls him a ‘quashie’ lawyer, again
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Member of Parliament for St Catherine South West, Everald Warmington, on Wednesday verbally attacked the Member of Parliament for St Andrew Western, Anthony Hylton, telling him “the only place you fit for is Riverton City, the dump…”
This happened during the sitting of the House of Representatives.
Interestingly, the Riverton City dump which is the largest waste disposal site in the country is located in Hylton’s constituency.
For good measure, Warmington, who is infamous for his outbursts, also repeated what it appears is now his favourite description of Hylton, again calling the Opposition MP a “quashie lawyer”.
Quashie is a term that refers to a black person, usually male, who is of little or no significance.
In October 2021, Warmington was upbraided by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Juliet Holness, for referring to Hylton as a quashie lawyer while claiming that Hylton had never won a case in court. He told Holness that he would not withdraw the statement unless Hylton could point to a case he had won in the courts. Hylton would oblige the following week and referred to the landmark case of Shanique Myrie vs the Government of Barbados before the Caribbean Court of Justice in which his client, Myrie prevailed.

Wednesday’s outburst by Warmington, who is also a Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation with responsibility for Works, followed some off-mic comment by Hylton after the Speaker of the House, Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert, had upbraided members for the late start to the sitting that was almost derailed because of a lack of a quorum.
Stung by what Hylton said, Warmington, who was late, but who is usually one of the most punctual members, shot back with “Don’t you ever dare do that again!”
Ignoring the Speaker’s pleas for him to calm down, Warmington added: “Anybody can say that except a quashie lawyer so don’t you do that again.”
With a half-smile and a frown on his face, Hylton waved off the comments as an enraged Warmington proceeded to liken him to the Riverton City dump.
“The only place you fit for is Riverton City, the dump, so don’t you ever do that….disrespectful and rude,” Warmington added.
When he responded last year after he was called a quashie lawyer by Warmington, Hylton noted that the description was “An act, which if done outside of the precinct of this honourable House, he would have paid dearly for”.
Continuing, Hylton said: “Nor do I think he is likely to mend his ways as a serial abuser of the House privileges as he is simply incorrigible and will continue to hide behind the protection given him by the Standing Orders, even as he continues to abuse those very privileges”.
