Antonio seals win for Hammers
LONDON, England (CMC) —Reggae Boy Michail Antonio, now playing second fiddle to 23-year-old, six-foot five-inch Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca, sealed all three points with an injury-time goal as West Ham United came from behind to defeat Fulham 3-1 in a London derby in the English Premier League (EPL) yesterday.
The 32-year-old Antonio, who came on as an 80th-minute substitute, cashed in on a comedy of errors in the 91st minute at London Stadium.
After his initial shot was saved by Bernd Leno, the German goalkeeper and Tim Ream got in each other’s way trying to clear, inadvertently presenting the striker with an open goal.
Antonio had replaced Scamacca, who scored for a third successive game in the 62nd minute with a chip after a hint of handball.
Having had to bide his time after his £32-million move from Sassuolo in the summer, Scamacca has now taken his Hammers’ tally to six goals in 12 appearances.
Fulham, who were forced to use Reggae Boy forward Bobby Reid as a makeshift defender, led after six minutes as Andreas Pereira rifled home from a tight angle.
However, Pereira then fouled Craig Dawson from a corner and Jarrod Bowen scored the penalty.
Antonio, who has this season lost his place in the Hammers XI to Scamacca, showed he had a point to prove, bustling through and driving into the empty net to seal the win after entering the contest late.
Meanwhile, it must be getting harder and harder for Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta to deny his team is a genuine title challenger in the EPL this season.
Still, after recording another statement win — 3-2 over Liverpool yesterday — Arteta was sticking to the script.
“They are really strong, they have shown that for five years,” Arteta said in reference to defending champions Manchester City, the winners in four of the last five seasons. “We haven’t done any of that.”
Well, if anyone is going to stop City, it looks like it will be Arsenal.
Pegged back twice by Liverpool at Emirates Stadium, Arsenal showed resilience and lots of character to recover again as Bukayo Saka converted a penalty in the 76th minute to seal an eighth win in nine league games this season.
“We are top of the league,” was the chant that swept around the stadium after the final whistle, with Arsenal going back above City by a point.
“They are in the best moments of their lives,” Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said.
The same cannot be said of Liverpool, who dropped 14 points off Arsenal not even a quarter of the way through the season.
Worse for Manager Jürgen Klopp, Luis Diaz left the Emirates on crutches with his left knee in a brace after getting hurt late in the first half, and Trent Alexander-Arnold was substituted at half-time with a twisted ankle.
“That is the icing on the cake,” said Klopp, whose team has won just two of its eight games in the league and has City up next.
Liverpool twice came from behind, having first conceded to Gabriel Martinelli after 58 seconds. Darwin Núñez scored the first equaliser and Roberto Firmino — the replacement for Diaz — cancelled out Saka’s first goal.
