Reggae Boy Clarke-Harris nets ninth goal in 1-1 draw
LONDON, England (CMC) — Reggae Boy Jon Clarke-Harris notched his ninth goal of the campaign but Peterborough United paid the price for spurning chances as lowly Burton Albion snatched a valuable point in a 1-1 draw in England’s League One on Saturday.
The 28-year-old striker broke the deadlock in the second minute of the second half, Jack Taylor’s superb pass picking out Ben Thompson who was denied by a last-ditch sliding clearance from Tom Hamer.
However, Hamer could only steer the ball straight to the third tier’s leading scorer who gratefully took advantage to put the hosts 1-0 up.
Burton goalkeeper Ben Garratt denied Clarke-Harris a second before Burton — who handed a debut to Reggae Boy and former Premier League star Adrian Mariappa on his return from Australia — hit back with a bang in the 75th minute.
Victor Adeboyejo initially saw a header kept out but he refused to be denied seconds later when firing his sixth goal of the campaign.
Reggae Boy Ethan Pinnock, a 29-year-old centre back, also got his name on the scoresheet but at the wrong end of the pitch as Brentford crashed to a heavy, 5-1 Premier League defeat at Newcastle United.
Pinnock stuck a boot out right in front of David Raya to deflect a low cross from the left past his own goalkeeper.
Pinnock was also at fault for Newcastle’s fourth, selling Raya short with an under-hit pass that Almiron burst onto before rifling home.
One-time Reggae Boyz target Ivan Toney, 26, now an England striker, got Brentford’s consolation goal with a 54th-minute penalty.
Jordan Bowery, 31, whose footballing dad came from St Kitts and Nevis, pounced in the 50th minute to score the vital goal as Mansfield Town Town won 1-0 at Barrow in League Two.
Rhian Brewster, 22, whose father is from Barbados, levelled with a close-range volley on 28 minutes for Sheffield United but the Championship leaders left Stoke City empty-handed as the 15th-place Potters ran out 3-1 winners.
It was the Blades’ second-successive defeat.
