Councillor wants relocation of St Andrew South Eastern constituency office
JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) councillor for the Trafalgar Division Kari Douglas has called out Member of Parliament (MP) Julian Robinson for operating his constituency office on the compound of the People’s National Party (PNP) headquarters (HQ).
At a recent JLP Area Council One conference, Douglas expressed concern that constituents of St Andrew South Eastern who are not aligned to the PNP do not feel comfortable visiting the headquarters to access various services provided by the Member of Parliament.
“You tell me now, which Labourite and which non-committed voter is going to go to the PNP headquarters that hosts the office of their president, their vice-president, their secretariat, the women’s movement, the youth movement? You are telling us that we have to come to the HQ in case we want to talk to the MP? No way! That is an injustice against the people of south east St Andrew and you must all get very serious with him and demand that the Member of Parliament’s constituency office is once and for all removed from the party headquarters.
“The Member of Parliament has operated this office for over two terms. This is an injustice against the people of south east St Andrew. You must get serious with him and demand that the Member of Parliament’s office is once and for all removed from party headquarters. You have people who don’t want anybody to know how they vote and the MP does not think that his resources, allocated through the Government of Jamaica, are good for all, it is only good for PNP people,” Douglas said.
In a response to Douglas’s claims, Robinson said the office is located in an annexed building and not the main building of the HQ. He added that he does not believe that people feel intimidated to visit the office.
“The office has been there and it accommodates all kinds of people. All people come there and they are served by the staff that is in it. We have not had any issues with people from all kinds of persuasion coming there,” Robinson said.
