Stressed? There’s an oil for that
ESSENTIAL oils aren’t just for adding to your diffuser so you can unwind after a hectic day while you take a bath, they’re good stress busters too. Many of us have them at home and will use them for our skin, body, face and hair for cleansing, moisturising and toning. But they are also high on the list of things that can literally peel the stress off you.
A 2009 study, The Effects of Aromatherapy on Stress and Stress Responses in Adolescents, found that stress levels were significantly lower when students received aroma treatments. Simple inhalation resulted in enhanced emotional wellness, calmness, relaxation or rejuvenation.
Another study done in 2022 (Effects of Aromatherapy on the Physical and Mental Health and Pressure of the Middle-Aged and Elderly…) uncovered positive effects of aromatherapy on the physical and mental health of the middle-aged and elderly, with an essential oil blend of lavender, bergamot, and marjoram effectively reducing stress.
“Essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint should always be in your home,” said aesthetician Nicola Meredith.
She also recommends these others for stress relief:
Rosemary oil
Not only an excellent treatment oil for the hair and skin, inhaling rosemary essential oil is a good remedy for exhaustion, and a great stress-reliever.
Ylang Ylang
Ylang ylang essential oil has been shown in studies to relieve anxiety in patient care settings. It is also said to be great for helping with depression, anxiety and stress.
Chamomile oil
Add a few drops to your diffuser, shower or bath for an incredible aromatherapy experience. It helps dull your anxiety and also helps with pain like nerve pain and wound healing, including ulcers and sores.
Lemongrass oil
You can’t beat the smell of lemongrass — it’s so calm and soothing. Whether you’re using it during a massage or as a beauty aid, just smelling this will instantly make you feel good.
Peppermint oil
This is used to treat headaches and migraine attacks, and is also for colds and congestion. If the smell of peppermint soothes you, adding it to your diffuser will do you a world of good.
Lavender oil
Apart from its uses to treat skin issues, lavender oil promotes relaxation, relieves anxiety, and helps you sleep better. It produces a calming effect, which can be beneficial for your mental health.
