SO2 – Greta Constantine Resort 2023
Here on The Rock…
Have you heard the news? Saint International models Elecia Gordon and Ashawni Stewart are the faces of the just-released Theophilio ‘Homecoming’ capsule collection for Amazon Luxury Stores. The images were shot on location last month in Negril, Jamaica.
Theophilio is a contemporary clothing label based in Brooklyn, New York. The founder, Edvin Thompson, uses inspiration from his youth growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, paired with New York City’s coming-of-age culture. He celebrates his Jamaican roots through use of vibrant colours and a signature palette of red, yellow, green and black.
Thompson was a 2021 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist and named American Emerging Designer of the Year at the 2021 CFDA/Fashion Awards.
Over in the States…
Emmy/Grammy/Oscar/Tony-winning artist Jennifer Hudson and Emmy award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph served up ‘Dreamgirl’ magic in an impromptu performance on Hudson’s self-titled talk show.
The legacy of Dreamgirls is undeniable. Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph originated the role of Deena Jones in 1981, scoring a Tony nomination in the process. Over two decades later, Hudson went from American Idol contestant to the role of a lifetime as Effie White in the film adaptation, which won her an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2007. Despite having the musical in common, the two Hollywood powerhouses haven’t shared a Dreamgirls moment until recently.
The moment happened during the second week of The Jennifer Hudson Show. The interaction was made that much more special as the two women celebrated Ralph’s historic Emmy win. The Jennifer Hudson Show is an hour-long, weekly talk/variety TV show.
More with Sheryl Lee Ralph…
Sheryl Lee Ralph made headlines recently when she won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Abbott Elementary. Ralph brought the house down with an unforgettable acceptance speech, but last Wednesday in LA at the premiere of Sidney, an Apple TV+ Oprah-produced documentary about Poitier’s life and legacy, Ralph was all about celebrating her deep connection to the late actor and icon. Ralph’s big Hollywood break was in his 1977 film, A Piece of the Action.
On her Instagram page she shared a photo at the premiere with the caption: “Wow! I can’t begin to tell you how full my heart is. What are the odds that after winning my first Emmy, I get to reflect and honour the man who gave me my first job in Hollywood, Mr Sidney Poitier. I wish he was here to see me on that stage. I know he would be so proud. I was so happy to see all my friends that have supported me throughout all the stages in my career. What a beautiful night, a beautiful way to celebrate such a wonderful man who touched the hearts of so many.”
And…
When Oprah herself sends you flowers you know it’s a big deal. However, it wasn’t until the premiere of the Sidney Poitier documentary last Wednesday evening in Los Angeles that the media mogul got to personally interact with and congratulate the Rock-blooded Emmy award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, when they met on the carpet.
On her IG story, Oprah shared, “Finally got to hug Sheryl Lee Ralph after the best Emmys speech of all time!”
Canada is up first…
The Greta Constantine Resort 2023 collection delivers the red carpet oomph the Jamaican-Canadian design duo of Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong have become known for.
From vogue.com
“You can wash this gown in the washing machine,” designer Kirk Pickersgill said, pointing to an extravagant, Crayola-hued dress constructed out of a neoprene-jersey double knit. Behind Pickersgill, who was speaking on a Zoom call from Toronto, sat a garment rack full of colourful, red carpet-ready clothes that are easy to picture on leading ladies like Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer. This is the Greta Constantine resort 2023 aesthetic: buoyancy mixed with power.
Greta Constantine is a collection of ready-to-wear womenswear based in Toronto, Canada. Founded in 2006 the label is derived from the combination of the name of Wong’s mother, Greta, with that of the Pickersgill’s grandfather, Constantine. The collection is available in over 40-stores worldwide across 15 countries including Al Othman, the Etoile Group, Nordstrom, and both Moda Operandi and Farfetch online. The pair works together in their Toronto-area studio — conceptualising, exploring, and challenging the fashions of today for the women of tomorrow. Some of the most famous #GretaGirls are Meghan Markle, Sheryl-Lee Ralph, Alicia Keys and Angela Bassett.
