All-rounder Smith only Jamaican selected at South Africa T20 League auction
CAPE TOWN, South Africa, (CMC) – All-rounder Odean Smith was the lone Jamaican player selected at the inaugural South Africa T20 League (SA20) auction for the 2023 tournament.
Smith, who was one of five West Indians selected at the auction to compete in the South Africa T20 League, was acquired by MI Cape Town for R1.7 million (US$95,810).
Meanwhile, Antiguan fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was the most expensive buy of the five. He was sold to Johannesburg Super Kings for R2.1 million (US$118,353).
The franchise had signed Guyanese all-rounder Romario Shepherd before Monday’s auction.
All-rounder Keemo Paul of Guyana, and St Lucian wicketkeeper/batsman, Johnson Charles, will join previously drafted Barbadians Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers at Durban Super Giants.
Paul and Charles were bought for R850,000 (US$47,905) and R425,000 (US$23,952), respectively.
Barbadian pacer Ramon Simmonds was acquired at a price of R175,000 (US$9,862) and will join Vincentian left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy, who was selected before the auction at the Paarl Royals.
There will be no West Indians turning out for the Pretoria Capitals or the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Among the West Indies players on the auction list who went unsold were Carlos Brathwaite, Roston Chase, Brandon King, Jayden Seales, Lendl Simmons, Hayden Walsh Jr, and Shai Hope.
