Murder cases dominate new term at Supreme Court
Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Jeremy Taylor has expressed concern that murder cases dominate the list of matters to be dealt with by the Supreme Court this term.
Speaking during the opening ceremony at the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston on Friday morning to mark the Michaelmas Term which will end in December, Taylor said, “we see that murder has not yielded its crown… it was still the empire of iniquity and king of sin in the courts with some 357 matters.”
The senior prosecutor added, “In fact if you add manslaughter and causing death by dangerous driving it is near 370 matters that deal with a fatality that is before this court and that number outnumbers many other parishes in this country.”
He in the meantime said the number of sexual offences continue to be of concern next to murder.
This term, some 847 matters in total are on the list to be dealt with between Friday, September 16 and December 20.
A total 730 cases were brought over or traversed from the Easter Term. A breakdown of the traversed cases shows 282 sexual offences matters ranging from rape to sexual intercourse with a person under 16 years old for which there are 83 matters.
