Calculus aims for the Mouttet Mile
Following Calculus‘ commanding win in the Kenneth Mattis Memorial Trophy on Sunday, September 11, 2022, trainer Gary Subratie said that if all goes well his four-year-old bay colt should be on his way to compete in the Mouttet Mile Invitational set for December 3, 2022. The Mouttet Mile carries a total purse of US$125,000.
“That is our objective, and yes he (Calculus) will probably start in a few races before the Mouttet, but the training and the races will be for Calculus to be at his best on December 3. There is a race coming up in two, three week time and we will be pointing him there. That race should be a useful prep for him on his way to the Mouttet Mile,” Subratie said.
Calculus stepped down from the top grade to contest the three-year-old and upwards Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance event going 9 furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m), and easily defeated rivals by 2 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:55.2.
“The instruction to the rider [Shane Ellis] was just to ride his own race. Shane knows this horse well and the horse loves the distance and everything just worked out,” Subratie added.
Running with the visor off, Calculus was pushed out of his starting stall to follow stablemate Awesome Treasure (Dane Dawkins) from second place around the clubhouse and down the backstretch until arriving at the half-mile (880m), when he picked up the lead full of running and at that moment, the race was done and dusted. .
Bred by Sensational Slam out of Trinket Box, Calculus won ahead of Marquesas (Shane Richardson) and Storm, the mount of Anthony Thomas. The splits were 25.4 x 50.0 x 1:15.0 x 1:40.3.
