Vows: A Yardie & A Trini
Let’s talk about migrating to another Caribbean island and finding true love in the midst of studying!
Jamaican-born, Trinidad-based social worker Kimeco Fletcher sat down recently with Tuesday Style Vows (TSV) to share the Caribbean love story between herself and Trinbagonian Makesi Chase. “I migrated to Trinidad and Tobago in 2014 at the age of 19 shortly after graduating from Johnathan Grant High school. Adjusting to another culture was difficult at first, but as time went by it became easier. Finding love was not in my books; I was focused on finishing school, creating a business and finding a job, but I did find love.”
“I met Makesi while attending the University of the Southern Caribbean,” she continued. “We were placed at the same institution to complete our practicum hours. We had never met each other before even though we were both pursuing social work. A friendship developed which led to a date at the movies. That one date led to many more and soon we were in a long-term relationship.”
In fact, post-graduation in 2019, the two moved in together. They would welcome son, Akesi, a year later. The proposal soon followed. Makesi made it an unforgettable experience as he proposed to Kimeco on her birthday. “It was an intimate affair as it was just us two along with our son… A memory that I hold close to my heart.”
Kimeco wasted no time in planning her dream wedding which took place at the Playa Del Este Resort, Trinidad on July 30, 2022. “We kept the event at a resort with an ocean view. We chose that venue because I always wanted a garden wedding and that location was perfect! The planning of the wedding went well, we had a planner that basically did everything. We told him our vision and he brought it to life. We opted for a rustic theme with tones of blush, white and greenery. And of course, the cake, a two-tiered rustic delight with mocha, flavoured with Baileys at the bottom and vanilla at the top,” she revealed.
Kimeco’s favourite moment was walking up the aisle; her perfectly fitted white gown and cathedral veil helped to make each step confident. “For the dress,” she told TSV, “I wanted something simple and elegant. After trying on a few, I said yes to an off-the-shoulder fishtail lace gown from Kootsie Bridal Boutique. It was beautiful and fitted my figure perfectly,” she added.
The dress secured, there were no further pre-wedding jitters. “I was not nervous at all; I felt good. I just wanted to get it over with so we could stop spending money,” she said, laughingly.
The morning of the wedding she woke up to a deluge. Thankfully, the rain stopped about an hour before the ceremony. “It must have been God!… Makesi and I always said that we wouldn’t cry, but walking up the aisle, brought a flood of tears… just seeing everything come together so beautifully made us both emotional,” she revealed.
A guest-filled reception wasn’t a part of Mr and Mrs Chase’s wedding event. The two slipped right into their honeymoon after the ceremony. The honeymoon was nothing short of memorable, the newlyweds travelled to Tobago, Kimeco’s first time going, for a four-day, three-night stay at the luxurious Tropikist Beach Hotel & Resort.
