Resubmission period for CXC SBAs coming
FOLLOWING the announcement about the alarming number of school-based assessments (SBAs) that have not been submitted to Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), deputy director of the Overseas Examinations Commission Sharon Burnett said there will be an extended period for resubmissions.
“I am anticipating that initial figure that might have been provided by the council is going to be revised downwards significantly,” she said during the virtual press conference for CXC results on Wednesday.
The CXC Director of Operations Dr Nicole Manning had announced non-submission of SBA reports for Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).
She said of the 404, 475 students across the Caribbean region who sat the exams for CSEC, 25,967, failed to submit SBAs. While for CAPE, of the 87,168 students, 4,938 did not submit SBAs.
“It is still something as an educational system, across the region, we do not want to see. One student left behind is one too many,” said Manning who was speaking at the official ceremony for CXC results in St Lucia on Monday.
Meanwhile, asked about the number of Jamaican students who did not submit SBAs, Burnett said there was no data readily available, but there were several reasons which would have resulted in non-submission.
“There are candidates who may have deferred, candidates whose SBAs may not have been acknowledged at the time marking was done because we have an extended period of queries because sometimes there are challenges with the uploads and when the SBAs are uploaded there may be issues,” she explained.
“It might not be a complete upload and so it is marked as missing and so even though the schools may report that they have a confirmation e-mail to say that all has been uploaded, in fact CXC may not have received them,” she said.
