RETRO ROAD FOR JONFX
PRODUCER John “JonFX” Crawford has made his mark in reggae, lovers rock, hip hop, gospel, and dancehall music. On August 26, he released Retro Dancehall, a 10-song album through his FX Music Group.
The project hears Crawford going old-school on previously released and new tracks.
“I go to many clubs that play Jamaican music and they tend to only play the retro styles. So that was what inspired me to release Retro Dancehall. Some of the songs I’ve had for a few years, and I recently added a retro twist to them,” Crawford told the Jamaica Observer’s Splash.
He said working with the artistes to accomplish the intended goals and objectives was a good experience. Those acts range from Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Busy Signal, and Ghanaian reggae star Stonebwoy.
“Retro Dancehall to me signifies the nostalgic feel of the music from the bus stops in Jamaica to passing the street dance. The early vibes that you hear at parties,” Crawford noted.
A child prodigy, Crawford started his career playing guitar in his family’s Kingston church. He also cut his teeth as a session musician at the East Kingston recording studio of producer Everton “Caveman” Moore.
Migrating to the United States, Crawford also did session work with legendary organist Glen Adams of The Upsetters, Lee “Scratch” Perry’s original house band.
Based in South Florida, he has produced and engineered platinum and gold-selling hits for rapper XXXtentacion, Gyptian’s gold-certified hit Hold Yuh and Sizzla’s album, I’m Yours, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart.
Crawford is credited on all of Retro Dancehall’s songs They include Retro Bounce it Around by Munga Honourable, Retro Cute Rider by Vybz Kartel, Bad Retro by Busy Signal, Retro Step Inna Yuh Face by Conroy Smith, and Retro Shoot Yuh Super Medley featuring American rapper Rick Ross, Bounty Killer, African dancehall artiste Stonebwoy, Sizzla and Danielle DI.
