It was an evening of celebration on Wednesday, as guests gathered at the Marketplace Entertainment Centre for the Arts (MECA) for the 9th annual UNIA Marcus Garvey Awards. The event — last held in 2018 — was staged on Marcus Mosiah Garvey’s 135th birthday and honoured ordinary Jamaicans doing extraordinary things.
The award segment saw top names accepting awards for their work in, among other categories, social service, music, business, and trade. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to former Prime Minister PJ Patterson, who said though he has received many awards, “this one is special coming from the movement which our first national hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey founded here in the city of Kingston 108 years ago”.
Musical tributes added to the event’s richness, while Ethiopian fare from Cafe Africa brought things home.
