Horizon, Storm to contest Basketball Summer League final
After three intense days of competition and high flying basketball, the PHASE 1 Academy’s Elite 1 Caribbean Basketball Summer League will culminate with the finals at the National Arena on Saturday.
Start time is set for 4:00 pm.
The undefeated Elite 1 Horizon will renew rivalry with Elite 1 Storm, whom they bested in a match-up on Wednesday. Horizon were impressive in the 106-84 victory. Canadian Anton Ivey from Elite 1 Horizon had 23 points and eight rebounds.
Elite 1 Waves and Elite 1 Rivers will lock horns in the battle for third place. The Rivers are yet to win a game after being defeated 75-91 by the Waves on Wednesday. American Xander Bowers from Elite 1 Waves recorded 21 points, four steals, three assists and three blocks in that encounter.
Head coach of Horizon Alphanso Remikie said though he is expecting a harder fight from the Storm, who will have skilled 6 foot 9 inch tall Jamaican centre, Adrian Forbes back in their lineup for the final, he is confident that his team’s strengths will again be on display.
“I expect them to give a good account of themselves by playing to their strengths. That is physical defence and team offence, I hope to have a better first half,” he said.
American Jim Brunelli who is the head coach of the Storm said he is very happy with his team’s overall performance in the league so far and that fans can anticipate them bouncing back in the finals after they make a few adjustments.
“Fans can expect us to bounce back and be ready to play as a team and to play together. We did that in spurts Wednesday night. We have to share the ball on offence. Defensively we need to be more consistent on doing the little things like contesting shots and boxing out. We also need to limit turnovers,” he said.
The League started last Saturday when Horizon asserted their dominance in a 109-64 win over the Rivers. American point guard Bobby Gray was the player of the game with 20 points, nine assists, six rebounds and six steals.
The second game was a 81-64 romp for the Storm over the Waves. Joel Bailey copped the player of the game with 17 points, three assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
On Sunday, Horizon registered a 76-61 win over the Waves. Barbadian point guard, Rasheed Maynard was named player of the match with 16 points, two assists, three rebounds, five steals and one block.
In the other contest, Storm secured a nail-biting 109-105 win over the Rivers. American shooting forward Drelan Tripplett scored 23 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and one steal in his player of the game performance.
All four teams in the league consist of a combination of players from Jamaica, Canada, and the United States.
For the finals, spectors will also be treated to a special half-time performance by dancehall artiste Ding Dong and a celebrity game.
The league is dubbed the biggest basketball entertainment event of the season, according to PHASE 1 Academy’s founder Wayne Dawkins.
“We are bringing them a professional basketball atmosphere that a lot of people only see on TV. We have high-flying basketball players, dancers, music and entertainment topped off by an energetic crowd. It’s the ultimate family entertainment event,” he said.
