Wednesday, August 17 marked the 135th birthday of Jamaica’s first National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey, and the special day was commemorated with the return of the 9th Annual UNIA Marcus Garvey Awards. The event — held at the Marketplace Entertainment Centre for the Arts (MECA) — was a celebration of Garvey’s birthday, Jamaica’s 60th Independence anniversary, as well as the 108th anniversary of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and African Communities League (ACL).
The evening’s awardees, many accompanied by their friends and family, turned out to enjoy an evening that recognised ordinary Jamaicans doing extraordinary things in the field of agriculture, arts, education and more.
The highlight of the evening and indeed the awards presentation was former Prime Minister PJ Patterson who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
