Sandals, Beaches Negril support underserved youth summer camp
NEGRIL, Westmoreland — In an effort to promote community building, Sandals and Beaches team members recently distributed toys, crafts, and school supplies to a summer camp being hosted by the Source Savanna-la-Mar community resource centre and the Y’s Menettes Club of Westmoreland.
The items were donated by guests of the resorts and made possible through Sandals Foundation partnership with US-based organisation Pack For A Purpose. Upon conclusion in August, the camp is expected to reach close to 140 youngsters ages 5-18 years old from surrounding communities such as Gully Banks, Seaton Crescent, Grotto among many others in the parish.
The Sandals and Beaches teams in Negril also treated the children to lunch as well as a motivational session encouraging the participants to make the most of their summer camp and enjoy and learn as much as they can. The children were also facilitated on the day by a representative from the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital, who educated them on proper personal hygiene and self-care.
Expressing her gratitude, Centre Administrator Heather Blake shared that the learning aids received have truly assisted in making the camp a success. She shared that the children and the Y’s Menettes team are grateful for the donations.
Blake noted that the camp aims to unite communities, develop young minds and ignite a desire for change among the attendees.
“Each camp day features a theme and the children are encouraged by guest speakers who engage them in both educational and fun activities, through thought provoking videos and life skills training. The children are grouped by age and are assigned youth leaders who act as mentors and supervisors,” Blake added.
The act of kindness is in line with the Sandals brand’s vision to inspire and encourage hope among persons in not just Jamaica, but the wider Caribbean region.
