It was an affair of the arts at Hillcrest Avenue on Sunday, July 31, 2022, as Decor VIII, a Jamaican fine art gallery showcasing works from the masters to the eclectic emerging artists, hosted the gallery opening of Brushes Of The Past: A Retrospective of Fine Jamaican Art From The 1960s to commemorate Jamaica’s Diamond Jubilee. Sixty masterpieces from 33 veteran artists of the 1960s period were shown.
In addition to the exhibition, a ceremony was held to honour five notables of that era, namely Susan Alexander, Kay Sullivan, Jerry Craig, Winston Patrick and George Rodney, for their valuable contributions to the current vibrant art scene.
Decor VIII founder and curator Hyacinth McDonald shared with Page 2: “I thought it was important to highlight these pieces from the ’60s, as the period was synonymous with social, cultural and political change, culminating with Jamaica getting its Independence from Great Britain. The 1960s was the perfect time for artists to make their statements on canvas. At that time, all Jamaicans were talking about this wonderful future, it was something that was exciting back then and I wanted to bring that back, the spirit of hope.”
