Argentinian family enjoys Denbigh show
DENBIGH, Clarendon — Little Phillip Tunon has often been to agricultural shows held during winter in his native Argentina.
On Monday, while on his way to see the livestock on display at the Denbigh show, his only complaint was the heat from the brightly shining sun. He vowed not to let that stop him later, though, in a search for somewhere on the expansive grounds that sold his favourite Jamaican meal of ackee and salt fish.
Not a big talker, the 10-year-old did mention one aspect of the Denbigh expo that he would love to see incorporated in similar events in Argentina.
“This show is very colourful and we don’t have so many colours, so that’s something I would like to have back home,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Phillip was at Denbigh with his father Gonzalo, his mother and sibling. The elder Tunon, who works at Serge Island Farms in St Thomas, only moved to Jamaica three months ago, so this is the first time the family is experiencing Denbigh.
“We are loving it! We are used to these things as we have a big one in Argentina as well and the kids love it there. It has animals and the people love it. There are people that love animals participating in that show,” he explained.
“[Except for the show being staged in winter], everything else is exactly the same with the people and animals, the farm equipment and the competitions, the companies supporting the farmers, the kids playing and enjoying the games, and the city people coming in,” Tunon added.
