Gospel singer killed in St Elizabeth
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Residents of Maxfield Town in Burnt Savannah have been left in shock following the murder of 57-year-old gospel singer Carmen Wellington at her home on Tuesday night.
A police report said Wellington, otherwise called Charmaine, who is described as a “Christian lady”, was gunned down about 8:35 pm in her yard.
She was reportedly in the company of relatives when gunmen travelling in a motor car opened fire, hitting her.
Head of the St Elizabeth police Superintendent Dwight Daley told the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday that a motive has not yet been ascertained.
“…But we are following some strong leads,” he said.
A resident who opted not to be named said she heard about six gunshots.
“I am so shocked when I realised that Charmaine was killed. She was a nice lady, very spiritual. I don’t know of her personally being involved in any mix-up with anyone,” the resident said.
Another resident shared similar sentiments.
“She is a Christian lady who liked to do her farming. Never have an issue with anyone in the community. This one is shocking,” he said.
Councillor Christopher Williams (Jamaica Labour Party, Santa Cruz Division) condemned the murder and said he was saddened by the incident.
“The entire community of Burnt Savannah is in mourning. Charmaine was a very jovial individual who had a good relationship with people in the community. It is just very unfortunate that this heinous crime took place,” he said.
“I am hoping that the police will be able to find those responsible for the murder of Charmaine and bring them to justice,” he added.
