Some key issues from Heads of Government in the 2022 CHOGM Communiqué
1) Heads renewed their commitment to the Commonwealth’s fundamental political values of democracy, gender equality, and inclusive development, as outlined in the Commonwealth Charter.
They further reiterated their commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other relevant international instruments.
2) Heads stressed the importance of the right to freedom of expression through peaceful, open dialogue, and the free flow of information, including through a free, independent, responsible, and pluralistic media, and committed to enhancing democratic traditions and strengthening democratic processes.
3) Heads underscored that measures taken to address the novel coronavirus pandemic should be targeted, necessary, transparent, non-discriminatory, time-bound, and proportionate.
4) Heads expressed deep concern about the continued mpact of COVID-19 on the global economy. They acknowledged that developing countries have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic in terms of impact on their economies, employment opportunities, livelihoods of people, and food security.
5) Heads underscored that the urgent threat of climate change, which particularly affects developing countries from across the Commonwealth, least developed countries and small island developing states, further exacerbates existing vulnerabilities, and presents a significant threat to COVID-19 recovery efforts and sustainable development, and a risk of undermining and reversing development gains.
6) Heads expressed concern about road traffic injuries, now considered to be the leading cause of death of children and young people worldwide.
